Offsetting Traffic Costs With Adsense

In this tutorial I will show you how to use Google AdSense to offset traffic costs on your current campaigns. Depending on how much traffic you are buying, this could drastically improve your profits.

CONTENTS:
1) What is Google AdSense?
2) Signup and Ad Code
3) Placing Ad Code On Your Page
4) Finalizing your AdSense Account.
5) Making Money & Optimization

What is Google AdSense?

AdSense is an advertising placement service owned by google. It's designed for website publishers who want to display advertisements on their sites to earn money. After you place the AdSense code on your page, the service will display ads relevant to individual visitor's search habits. You are paid based on impressions and clicks. However, Clicks pay much more than impressions. AdSense pays Net 30 on the 21st of every month. This Tutorial assumes that you are purchasing PPC traffic or other related traffic sources for your campaign.

Signup and Ad Code

In this section we will create and Adsense account and get the necessary ad code for your page.

STEP1
Create an AdSense account. Signup at http://adsense.com

STEP2
Login with your Gmail account or create one now. Enter your landing page URL for your current campaign. sen2.PNG

STEP3
Continue the registration. When finished click 'Submit My Application' sen3.PNG

STEP4
After you've completed the registration, you will see this page. Your account is still under review and should be approved within a few days. Let's click on 'Get Started Now' and complete our part of the approval process.

STEP5
From this page, let's click on 'New Ad Unit'.
sen5.PNG

STEP6
From this page, let's click on 'New Ad Unit'. Name your Ad Unit. Depending on the layout of your website you can have up to three different Ads on a single page. We will get into that in more detail later. Click 'Save and get code'. sen6.PNG

STEP7
Copy down your AdSense code. We will use this in following steps. sen7.PNG

Placing Ad Code On Your Page

To maximize exposure to your AdSense code, it is important to strategically place your code on your page. AdSense allows up to three content ads per page. Depending on your site layout will determine where you want to place your ads.

Here is a good example of ad placement. As you can see they have a 728x90 placement at the top of the page.

sen8.PNG

As we continue down the page we see another ad placement on the right side. This ad is a 300x600 large skyscraper placement.
sen10.png

And the final placement we also see on the right of the page. This ad is a 336x280 large Rectangle placement.

sen11.PNG

This layout should be a good example for you to start. As time goes on you may feel that you want to test different locations and placement types. This layout may not be optimal for your page design. Use creativity when implementing your ad code.

STEP1
Login to your webhost and open your file manager. img14.png

STEP2
Locate your index.php/html file and open it for editing. img25.png

STEP3
Place your Ad Code from the previous section on your page. sen12.PNG

I would create a new Ad Unit for each placement on your page. This will give you data on each of the individual placements which will help you optimize in the future.

Finalizing Your AdSense Account

There are two final steps before your account is completely setup. These both have to be done in order to get paid.

Adding Your Banking information

STEP1

Login to your AdSense account and click the gear icon at the top right of the page. Select Payments from the drop down menu.
sen13.PNG

STEP2
As you can see, you have no existing payment methods. Click 'Manage' in the 'How you get paid' section.
sen14.PNG

STEP3
We won't be able to add your payment method until you have a balance of at least $10.00 but I thought it was important to cover this section. When you add your bank account, you also have to provide the address associate with your bank account. MAKE SURE THAT THIS IS YOUR CURRENT ADDRESS. This is extremely important as Google will ask you to confirm the address used with your bank account.
sen15.PNG

Verifying Your Address

STEP1
After you have generated $10.00 within your account, you will be required to verify your address. Google will physically mail a pin number to your physical address. You need to submit the pin number within your AdSense account prior to getting paid. Here is an example of the pin number.

Making Money & Optimization

After your code has been placed, you will get an email accepting or declining your account. You will likely be approved as long as your site isn't adult content, gambling or other questionable niches. I would take time to read over the Google AdSense policies to ensure your are compliant. Google AdSense will optimize it's delivery of ads over time.
As volume increases on a consistent traffic source, the more money you will make. Let's take a peek at some stats.

Below is an example of what I made in the last part of September. As you can see RPM is a fairly low. As time goes on it improves with AdSense automatically optimizing.

sen17.PNG

Below is a report for October. As you can see the RPM starts to increase as the month progresses. Changing traffic sources will cause your RPM to drop initially as well. Google AdSense optimizes according to the source.

sen19.PNG

AdSense may not always be a ton of money but it certainly helps on campaigns with low ROI. If you are purchasing traffic via PPC or other means and you are not using AdSense, you are essentially throwing money away. In some cases this can product hundreds of dollars per day in extra revenue.

Hey. Has anyone tested if it's better to go with Adsense or just stick your own banners for contextually congruent offers? Or perhaps both I guess?

You need to be careful when applying a combination with AdSense. Make sure your offers (external links) are not violating AdSense's policies. They even have such policies at place that doesn't permit you linking to certain type of sites/products/services.
