Quick Guide to Solo Ads

So what exactly are ‘solo ads’ and how do they work?

Simply put, a solo ad is a single solitary ad that you send out as an email message to subscribers of a newsletter or ezine.

If you have been around the internet marketing arena for sometime, it is impossible that you have not come across the term “list”. Indeed, one of my friends, calls his list the most crucial component of his success in online marketing. A lot of people making money online have built a list of subscribers. This is a list of people who have signed up to receive regular messages from the list owner. And people are on this list because they are getting continuous value in their emails.

Solo ads are ads which target precisely such a list. The list belongs to someone else, but you get to promote your product/services or offer to this list.

Why Solo Ads Deliver High Quality Traffic

As an affiliate marketer, using solo ads gives you access to a set of people who are interested in a specific topic or subject. After all, they have signed up to the list because they want to receive regular information.

So will blindly choosing an ezine and just creating a solo ad guarantee success for your affiliate marketing business?

Of course not.

Why

Because it is NOT as simple as that (anything in life rarely is). You need the right strategies and techniques to ensure that you are reaping the maximum benefitsof using solo ads as an advertising strategy. And read on to find out how exactly you can do that.

A Newbie Guide to Using Solo Ads for Getting High Quality Affiliate Traffic

1. Identify the Right List

This is the first and the most important step in starting out with solo ads. Identify a list that has a connect with your offering, one that is in the same niche as you are. For instance, if you have a gardening product, running a solo ad on an internet marketing list is silly and useless. Even if the said list has 5000 subscribers and is high converting (as you may read in reviews on their site), it will not work for you because that is not RELEVANT traffic for your offer.

I have used an exaggerated example. The choice is more difficult when you have to choose between lists in your niche, which are closely related to what you offer. In that case, move on to other aspects.

2. List Characteristics

a. Is it an Opt-in List?

Rules are very stringent about sending emails to people without their permission. So make sure that people have opted-in to the list.

b. Number of Subscribers

Obviously a crucial parameter. Some experts recommend not choosing any list below 5000 subscribers. But I do think it would depend on your niche as well as the quality of the list. But of course avoid lists with 100 or 200 people.

c. List Quality

Not all lists are created equal. Find out if the list is dynamic, do people respond to messages they regularly receive? What is the regular content they are receiving from the list owner? Is it good, high quality content? The best way to find this out is to opt in to the list yourself.

d. List Performance

It helps to know the how the list has performed in terms of clicks and conversions. You can get this information by talking to the list owner or referring to testimonials and reviews of other users of the list.

3. The Solo Ad

Create a compelling solo ad that will get the reader interested in your offer and compel him or her to click on your link. Here are a few strategies you could use to achieve this.

a. The Headline - Use an attention grabbing headline. Avoid words like FREE, xx% OFF. These are construed as spammy and the email may not even be delivered into the inbox.
b. The Body - In the body of your solo ad, a story telling approach works. You can say something like how you started with nothing and today you have $$_________. Or how you had debilitating pain and today you are pain free. Essentially reader should be able to SEE a visible change for the better, which will get them interested in your offer.
d. Offer Value - Give away something of value. Say you are talking about an ebook that offers 50 social media strategies for success. Your ad could give away the first two. And then you say that for the next 48, awesome strategies, click here.
e. Never Sell - Never sell in your solo ad. Always, presell, develop interest and then you can focus on converting the customer. The most common approach is to get them to join your list first.

4. Direct Traffic to Landing Page

It is not a good idea to lead the traffic directly to your offer. You should lead readers to a landing page or squeeze page to build a bigger list of your own.

In fact it is a good idea to create customized landing pages for each solo ad, making it specific to the list or use a tracking program like CPV Lab. You can check out this post to see how TLDRMoney has set up CPV lab to track subscribers.
http://powerhouseaffiliate.com/forum/forum/cpa-discussion-forums/follow-along-campaigns/1623-5-phase-list-building-sample-campaign-diet-niche

5. Track the Results

Track the performance of your ad to find out what’s working and what is not. Use these insights to create even better solo ads and target your traffic even more precisely.

So Where Can You Buy Solo Ads?

I have recently bought from http://Udimi.com

That's a great place to start.

You can also search Google for things like "your niche" solo ads.

For example just have a look at what came up for diet solo ads:

Well that's all for this post...let me know if you have questions or comments thanks.

This is a topic of interest to me, but I see that this thread has no activity.

Are solo ads as a niche not relevant anymore?

Hi solo ads are still a very viable traffic source yes. If you can get a newsletter out to a list catered to your niche it is highly effective.

Another question or two

How about as a business model?

Like maybe arbitrage for earning while list building?

Solo ads in my opinion are a traffic source to use after other places have already been exhausted. It really depends on your niche and products. In the MMO niche it is used a lot to build a list. For example udimi.com is pretty much all MMO lists and can be a good source of traffic you could probably also get cheaper leads on Facebook if lead gen is your goal.

MMO is the niche and I was thinking that by using abitrage and a leave behind script on sites like Udimi, I could get paid to build a list.

In addition to using other forms of advertising, with the profits, to continue to grow the list.

Nice! Do you mind sharing more about what your plan is exactly?

This is how it is playing in the mind of a newbie ( I am seeking feedback, corrections, critics, "dat-a-boys," ect.)

After spending some time on Udimi, I noticed that there were a number of people who were obviously new
sellers, they had no reviews, but they all had orders in their queue.

The seasoned sellers were selling for .65+/click and the new sellers are selling at .40, .45/click. It seems that
they are under cutting the seasoned sellers to get reviews and build their reputations. Since I know a source
of quality solo ads at .30, .35/click, I could post for .45 with a 20% discount for first time buyers.

That would leave me with a modest .01-.06/click, which I would pool with my next order of clicks in the beginning.
In addition, I would use a leave behind script on my url that I use to order my clicks. Any additional clicks resulting
from this I would also let roll over to be sold in the next batch of orders until I build a steady flow of orders.

Once I have a steady flow of orders, my price would be .50/click. Which would give me .15-.20/click that could be
used to fund Google/Bing ads.

Now let's look at the numbers, if I sell 100 clicks @ .45 with 20% off, that would give me $36 to purchase @ $35.
That leaves $1 profit.

Now the seller will give a minimum of 10% over delivery on the clicks 110, which will all go to my buyer, but the
multiplier script will give me an additional ( avg. 1.3 x 110) 33 clicks.

An order of 100 clicks profits $1 and 33 clicks. 10 orders profits $10 and 330 clicks that can sell for $150.

How sound is my reasoning?

I don't know if the profit is worth the effort. Maybe in not following correctly. How much room to scale is there?

This is an interesting idea. So you are saying you are going to buy orders from Udimi and the resell those clicks on Udimi? Is this allowed in their terms of service? If so, this makes me feel like Udimi is just a pile of resellers with the same people??

No, I would not be buying from Udimi. The lowest price on Udimi, as stated above is .40, I would be purchasing from between .30 - .35 from a different source.
But again Udimi is not the only platform, just the oldest and best known.

The only limit to scaling is your ability to supply and get customers. There is no shortage of buyers or sellers, it is like the Wall St. of Solo Ads.
Just one search of Facebook Groups and you will find a Thousand solo ad groups, some with over 40,000 members.

Seems like a twist on straight up arbitrage which could work for you. I would love to hear more as you continue down that road. (if you do)

I would think it will become a tedious task to manage and a lot of monitoring to ensure you don;t get complaints and bad reviews.

You would likely need to outsource if you ever wanted to scale something like this, and you have to assume Udimi would be ok with it.

One way you could get new customers is to create your own website which would offer people access to email traffic. If it looked legit enough and had some good testimonials you could probably sell your traffic through your own platform eventually. Before going down that road you might want to prove the concept.

It's no different really than many ad platforms rebrokering ad placements

Seems like the thread is dead-ish and thrive365 has left the building, but selling on udimi is no bueno.

Buying on udimi is a good test for a funnel..

You score from there and you're golden elsewhere..

There are a few FB solo groups where you can find better traffic, but you pay a premium for it, which gets your lead cost way past $1 a lead...

Have to be rocking some serious conversions or play the long game.

You can arbitrage for list building though. That's what I'm going to do..

Would love to hear more on your most recent strategies in a new post, considering this post is pretty old yes. I recently ran a test on some direct solos and they yielded somewhat good results but I don't have a lot of time right now to go all in on Solo ads.
